Funkadelic - Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow (1970)

Recorded in one day while the whole band, and probably everybody involved in mixing and facilitating, was tripping complete balls. Combine that little piece of knowledge with the title, and you're probably not even reading this right now since you've already hopped in your car to go buy this record.

Oh so you're back and done having your mind blown by that crazy mess. I know I don't have to, but I'll quickly talk about some of my favorite points of this album. You may have heard me say it before, but each of these early Funkadelic albums places its emphasis on a certain element they all contain, and there's no proper answer for which one is the best. The strength here is in the rhythm guitar explosions of Tawl Ross. There aren't many albums where the rhythm guitar is the absolute centerpiece and stealing the show away from the lead guitar, and we're talking about Eddie Hazel here! Unfortunately, Maggot Brain would be the last music Ross made with the band as a result of being permanently spooked by a bad experience with LSD. Back to the subject at hand, Tawl Ross is just hammering out these rhythm chords and giving off so much rocking psychedelic power you won't hear on even Maggot Brain, which is certainly psychedelic enough. The lyrics aren't as world peace oriented either; these are just on-the-spot phrases that they thought were going to sound great with their music, and they do, "Are You Satisfied!" "The Kingdom Of Heaven Is Within" "I Wanna Know If It's Goooood To Ya Baby". Perfect, just perfect. It's like a more comedic, or not, version of A Love Supreme.... I'll let you figure that one out.
