Bill Evans - Explorations (1961)

A cerebral and mellow piano trio album. That being said this music is never short on melody and mood. The modal backbone provides a lot of original avenues for this genius and the rest of his rhythm section (probably his best with LaFaro and Motian) to explore and discover. I'm not typically a fan of this white boy jazz with minimal blues and bop influences, but the bittersweet lullaby tunes of the album are more than just an exception. Beautiful and original, most other albums that sound like this are nothing more than a sub-par imitation.
