Joy Division - Closer (1980)

One of those must hear albums I'm posting because people who don't yet have it need to get it somewhere. I don't really know how to attack this summary, but I'll start by saying that most people who are new to Joy Division will appreciate this second album more at first for its ambiguity and more immediately exciting sound. Closer plays with a lot of sounds--synths, drum machines, overdubs, delays--that when all put together sound like a rollercoaster of insecurity, trauma, and hopelessness (this is without Ian Curtis's lyrics). Add Ian's vocal shakiness and pathetic lyrics and it's one of the most desperate sounding albums ever made.
