Kool Moe Dee - How Ya Like Me Now (1987)

Kool Moe Dee was one of the first rappers to hit wax (or just one of the first rappers) and was a member of Sugarhill's Treacherous Three. Starting in the late 70s and staying relevant until the early 90s, Moe Dee probably had the longest serious career of any 80s rapper. If you're new to the Oldschool, his delivery might sound wacky and funny, but if you acquire a taste for pre-88 rapping you'll realize that Moe Dee is on point. While his delivery is standard up-down-up-down AA BB rhythm and rhyme scheme, his command of the mic, word choice, and development of lines still sounds fresh today, especially when all he does is brag about how cool he is. The beats are dope too, perhaps not on the level of the stunning work done by Grandmaster Dee or Flash, but they're funky and the synths and sampling is sophisticated and well placed for a good time.
