John Coltrane - Coltrane (1962)

Coltrane is one of the classic quartet's first recordings for Impulse and its hyper-dilated vein of energy will steam roll you into loving this group. Coltrane plays both soprano and tenor saxophones and while he hasn't yet been fully immersed by the avant garde, the wondrous roar of the band and the album's steamy brothiness is mysteriously different from any other modal jazz being played at the time. One of the best albums in Coltrane's discography, and balanced enough for anybody to enjoy it.
