Lil Boosie (aka Boosie Badazz) - In My Feelings (Goin' Thru It)

There are cracks in Boosie's resilience. There's only so much a man can go through without breaking, and most couldn't go through a tenth of Boosie's life. After living in the streets without a father his whole life, being set up for a third drug charge, giving him an 8 year sentence (he got out early), then barely beating a bullshit life sentence for murder you'd think Boosie's trials and tribulations would have to be over. You'd be wrong. In November he announced that he'd been diagnosed with kidney cancer. They sucessfully removed it, but if you know about cancer you know it often comes back.

Boosie is sometimes compared to Pac, and I think, if understood in the right way, this comparison is completely valid. His flow, writing style, accent, and beat selection is of course completely different, but his overall style and subject matter bears a good bit of resemblence to Pac's. In addition to their shared fight for social justice, they share what makes both of them even greater than their incredible skill on the mic: their ability to lay raw emotion on the track. The greatest music in my opinion successfully conveys an emotion, and Boosie succeeds in this on every album.

In My Feelings is different from any of the previous Boosie albums. He doesn't avoid the elephant in the room, mentioning his cancer on almost every track. Every one of his previous albums had this incredible drive, this resilience that many call hustle. In this album he's starting to lose that, he's teetering on the edge of giving in to the struggle and letting himself fall into a state of apathy. The beats are simple and low, and provide an excellent background for his dispirited verses. Many Boosie fans may dislike this albums as it doesn't have that drive we know and love him for, but all he can do is let us in his feelings. This is what he's going through, and he's made some incredible art out of it. I don't know how much more he can take, but he deserves to live a better life, and I hope he will find that.
