Young Thug - I'm Up (2016)

Young Thug has been on a roll since he popped up in the scene a few years ago. His Slime Season mixtapes and Barter 6 show that he's got genuine talent and is here to stay for a while. My main gripe with him is that he turns out a fuck ton of tapes that all seem a little half-assed. Not that I don't like them, I mean I'll take half-assed Young Thug and Rich Homie Quan any day over many other rappers at their prime, but he always seems like he's so close to achieving the best album of the century and falls just short. Maybe we can hope that he'll follow in Kevin Gates' footsteps and save his best for the "album" debut. I think that the production on I'm Up is definitely a step in the right direction--it's more focused and the shorter duration of the mixtape makes that even more effective. The beats are finding where Thugger wants to go and just need some tweaking in the mastering and the hook and bridge sections to make it happen all the way. I was feeling the second half of the mixtape the most and was pleased to hear the magnificent Hercules on this. The combination of Slime Season 2 and I'm Up has me really pumped for the release of Slime Season 3 (if rumors of Kanye and Drake appearing on it are squashed, that is).
