The Future Sound Of London - Lifeforms (1994)

After listening to and posting the Global Communication album the other day, I figured it was time for me to give the other monumental ambient album of 1994 a spin. Lifeforms is an ambient techno album through and through, but it sounds less digital and more organic than 76:14 or Twoism. I'm not quite sure how they'd get that effect, maybe it's something with LFOs or filters (I don't fucking know this shit), but the album echoes the airy playfulness heard on the first two Orb albums from a few years before its release. The duo uses more danceable drum patterns than a lot of their IDM contemporaries and these compelling upbeat rhythms don't range far from the acid house moniker. Everything that's good about ambient is here, but it doesn't necessarily make you feel like you're stuck in a VCR player or a cathode ray roundscreen television.
