Dinosaur Jr. - Beyond (2007)

I hold Beyond's opening three songs very close to my heart. I was either 11 or 12 years old when the album came out and I was constantly listening to those. Unfortunately, what follows the opening trilogy is pretty damn disappointing. I can't count how many times I have started this album and turned it off at Back To Your Heart. Why does Lou Barlow need to put his own songs on these albums? They're fucking terrible...they were also pretty terrible in the 80s, terrible in the 90s, and yes, Sebadoh is, always was, and always will be a hunk of shit. The good news is that J's songs are honest attempts at reviving those things that once made Dinosaur Jr incredible. Sure, he plays everything very safe, but I guess that's the easiest way for a past-prime musician to make solid music. If you are a fan of the band's most acclaimed work and want some more of J's guitar styles, check this out. No, this is nowhere near their 1987-1991 years and the few people who actually believe that are completely delusional, but I think the download is worth it for the first three songs, which are among the band's all-time best. Shit, this album is worth the download just for the song Crumble (the sample below), amazing.
